The Coach was sacked at the Stadio Olimpico in January and terminated his contract by mutual consent this week so he could start at Marseille.

“I expected Roma to free me from my contract, but it was not easy,” Garcia told L’Equipe.

“They could’ve shown more class, it’s true. I eventually left with less than 50 per cent of what the club owed me, but at least I managed to leave.

“The truth is I wanted to get back to work. Roma were hoping I’d just walk away with a handshake if a big club came in for me. It’s not about the money, but when you sign a contract, it’s only normal you respect it.”

Garcia also looked back at what went wrong in his 18 months on the Olimpico bench, including President James Pallotta choosing the new fitness coaches last season.

“It was a mistake to allow the introduction of new fitness staff. I hope it won’t happen again: if it does, it’s better to just leave. You save time when working with competent people that you trust.”

Another sideswipe was taken at Roma’s American owners when discussing Marseille and their chief Frank McCourt.

“It is very important that McCourt lives in France and I told him it’s crucial the players see him. He is the owner, the one who pays the bills. That allows him to talk, to change and to directly influence with an interpersonal relationship.”
