Giacomo Bonaventura believes Milan “emerge from this defeat stronger” after falling 3-0 to Genoa.

“There are no smiles tonight. We were ready for a tough game, but didn’t manage to make our plan stick and didn’t defend their counters well enough,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

A victory would’ve put the Rossoneri top of the Serie A table for at least 24 hours, but they crumbled at Marassi and saw Gabriel Paletta sent off.

“A slip-up can happen, we need to prepare for the next match at home with Pescara. I think this defeat could even do us good.

“In the first 20 minutes Genoa kept a very high tempo and we fell into their trap. We should’ve kept the ball better and showed more nous, but this is a young side and these are learning experiences.

“I feel we emerge from this defeat stronger for it. It would’ve been nice to be at the top of the table and this was a good opportunity, but Genoa did better tonight.

“I certainly don’t think we are on the same level as Juventus and Roma, as we are missing that little something.”
