Mazzarri: ‘Give me 20 Hamsiks!’

Walter Mazzarri reflects on his time with Napoli - “give me 20 Marek Hamsiks and I’ll win everything!”

The Coach guided the Partenopei into the Champions League, as well as winning the Coppa Italia in 2012.

Mazzarri is now manager of English Premier League side Watford, but he still keeps a close eye on Serie A.

“Will Juventus win their sixth Scudetto in a row?” Mazzarri considered, speaking to Corriere della Sera.

“Probably. Every year they build their squad to win the Scudetto, the have history, money and experience. And their the strongest technically.

“Napoli is a club with an important project, but inevitably it’s different to Juventus. The idea is to stay competitive, be in the top places in the League.

“Give me a team of 20 Hamsiks and I’ll win everything! He has extraordinary tactical intelligence.”

Mazzarri also took the time to discuss his new life in England, and says even the food isn’t as bad as many Italians would think.

“The Premier League is a fascinating League. I love the project of the Pozzo family at Watford, I can share my style of play with the President, trying to improve the squad and get satisfaction.

“Everyday life here is closer to my way of being: rigour, respect for the rules, order. In life, just like in football, that’s part of what you need to win.

“In the Premier League it’s difficult to say after seven, eight, nine games who’ll win the title. It’s competitive, but it’s also about the football culture.

“I’m still learning English, but the players understand me well on the pitch, and that counts. I’ve got an Italian who has been living here for 25 years to help me.

“The food? I continue to eat fish, even here. You just have to know right places. In Italy I would skip lunch, here I’ve learned to eat yoghurt with honey. It’s a step forward, no?”

The Coach’s biggest result so far is arguably beating Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

“You could say it’s just about beating Manchester United, but it’s not exactly like that,” Mazzarri explained.

“The best thing wasn’t the win itself, but what it meant to my players. I can still hear them, it meant a lot to me.

“On my arrival at Inter, Mourinho sent me best wishes and congratulations. Then sometimes we’ve happened to meet and exchange views.

“After the match we discussed different things, this is the football culture I like.”
