“Empoli were organised and they were all tracking back to defend. The pitch also made it difficult to pass the ball around quickly and there’s always the risk of getting caught on the counter.
“We have won much more difficult matches this season. We created many opportunities to score, but also missed many, plus of course Lukasz made some fine saves.
“We developed an approach with three centre-backs, but weren’t good enough at passing the ball around to create the spaces.”
Mohamed Salah had penalty appeals in stoppages for a small shirt tug, but was booked for simulation as he flailed his arms going down.
“Was it a penalty? It depends on who you ask. At times just contact is enough, at times there needs to be more. Salah’s shirt does stretch a little, but in my view it is not a penalty.”
