Gonzalo Higuain’s penalty had put them in control, but the defence switched off on a free kick for Corentin Tolisso’s equaliser five minutes from time.

“When you concede a goal, there is always a mistake somewhere,” Evra told Mediaset Premium.

“For me that wasn’t the real issue, as considering their performance the goal could’ve arrived at any moment. It’s a shame that in the last 20 minutes we lacked character and lost confidence, but that is the truth.

“Fatigue and other issues are just excuses, we have to be honest. We are a team that has faith in our abilities, but at that moment we went too deep and lost control of the game.

“We are all angry. We had to win today to qualify automatically, now we have to go and fight for the result in Sevilla. It’s a tough moment, but not the end of the world.

“I am angry at the way we failed to control the game, but it’s not as if I’ll have sleepless nights over it. If I didn’t have faith in this team, I’d ask the Coach not to be play me anymore!”
