Mauro Icardi blamed the Inter mentality for their 2-1 defeat at Southampton. “Every time we concede a goal, it’s like the world collapses around us.”

This was the first game under caretaker Coach Stefano Vecchi, as Frank de Boer was fired this week.

The Nerazzurri had taken the lead at St Mary’s in this evening’s Europa League clash and Samir Handanovic saved a penalty, but Saints turned it around in the second half.

“There’s not much to say. It is an unlucky moment, everything is going wrong,” Icardi told Sky Sport Italia.

“We did well in the first half, then took the lead, but I don’t know why every time we concede a goal, it’s like the world collapses around us.

“It keeps happening, a goal out of nowhere and we just lost it. If we knew what was causing it, we’d change immediately, because we all want to do well.

“We’ll have to fight on as long as we can for qualification.”

The search for a new Inter tactician is still going on, but was De Boer really to blame?

“I think in football the Coach always pays because it’s impossible to fire 25 players. I always said that when the Coach leaves, it’s because the team did not give its best.

“Now we’ll see, we are working with Vecchi and then see what happens.”
