Eusebio Di Francesco said Sassuolo would’ve been “heroic” to take the Europa League victory, but were pegged back 2-2 by Rapid Vienna.

The Neroverdi were 2-0 up despite having a decimated squad, which forced them to change system, but conceded two very late goals at the Mapei Stadium.

“It’s really disappointing not to have won, as the lads put in a performance of real tenacity and determination,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s really disappointing not to have won, as the lads put in a performance of real tenacity and determination,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the circumstances we were in, it would’ve been a heroic victory. The real shame here was that I had no real options off the bench.

“At the end we were suffering, but not really running any risks, then two shots on target and two goals, something that unfortunately is happening to us a lot lately.

“I tried to give an identity to the side and had an excellent response. We deserved to win, it’s a real shame that we didn’t bring home the full result.

“The lads were full of regret, because they were squeezing out the last drop of energy they had and have been just incredible in recent weeks with so many games.

“It’s not easy to swallow a draw like this, but the lads showed determination and how much they care for the shirt. A victory would’ve made all of that feel even better.

“I have little to reproach them for and at the end just wanted to hug all of my lads. I will do it tomorrow.”
