Mertens eyes ‘great’ Napoli stay

Dries Mertens has expressed his desire to stay at Napoli on the basis that he is “playing regularly” and part of “a truly great group”.

Mertens has been among Napoli’s best performers this season, capitalising in Gonzalo Higuain’s absence with six assists and as many assists in just 14 appearances.

“The Champions League is very important, we want to give it our all,” the winger told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“The next game against Dynamo Kiev will be important and we know it. Lazio? We’re ready for them because it will be another very important game.

“We’ll be playing at home and they’re ahead of us [in the table]. I don’t like that, but we want to win. We hope there’ll be a full house.

“I’ve always had this desire but now I’m playing regularly and this makes me happy. What only counts is tomorrow’s match.

“Napoli a great group? I want to stay here for this reason, we’re truly a great group.

“Unfortunately we didn’t win in the Champions League, but drawing [at Besiktas] is okay.

“This group are putting in more force, and that gives me confidence for tomorrow.”
