Maurizio Sarri believes Napoli dominated Lazio and “are playing some of the best football of my tenure, but not converting our chances.”

The tactician was extremely angry during the 1-1 draw, caught on camera punching the wall of the dug-out – creating a large dent – and smashing water bottles on the ground.

“I get angry when someone doesn’t do the movement we had prepared. The bench is really weak, as it gave way straight away. I don’t think I’m that strong,” Sarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“If you put a camera on a Coach, you’ll always see something like that, and I am a Coach who is passionate and participates in the match.

“I was angry at a corner, as Piotr Zielinski didn’t go to the place where we had studied he should go and there was a gap in the Lazio defending. I cannot stand when people don’t take the work we do in training into the match situation. It’s like blasphemy to me.

“We had 10 shots on target and had 18 chances to seven for Lazio, so we really piled on them. I think Napoli are currently playing some of the best football of my tenure and yet we are not winning. The same thing happened in Istanbul with Besiktas.

“We are not converting the many opportunities that we create to dominate games, but I’d be more worried if we weren’t creating the chances at all.”

Manolo Gabbiadini was left on the bench to begin with today, so Dries Mertens played as a False Nine. Was this a response to President Aurelio De Laurentiis suggesting a change of system to accommodate Gabbiadini?

“Mertens was rested on Wednesday, so it was clear he’d start tonight. I don’t want to comment on what the President says, as he can give any advice he wants. I am the Coach and I make the ultimate decision.

“I don’t think it would be a good idea, as it would mean putting Marek Hamsik in the role he hates and limiting our attacking options. I wish the President had told me in private, though.

“I cannot be worried with performances like this, but I can be disappointed that the team isn’t getting the points it deserves. We’ve been moving defensively well recently too, which was not easy against a talented attacking side like Lazio, but conceded on the only real shot on target.

“We have to push on without feeling sorry for ourselves, without thinking of those who have left on transfers or those who are injured.”
