Serie A Week 12: Did You Know?

Gigi Buffon joins the 600 club, Mohamed Salah's maiden treble, Empoli end their drought and Grande Torino hitmen in Susy Campanale's stats round-up.

Gigi Buffon marked his 600th Serie A appearance. The only others to have reached this tally are Paolo Maldini (647), Javier Zanetti (615) and Francesco Totti (607). This week the goalkeeper also had his 100th Champions League match.

Mohamed Salah celebrated his maiden Serie A hat-trick. The last Roma player to enjoy a top flight treble was Mattia Destro in a 3-1 away victory at Cagliari on April 6, 2014.

Of Salah’s eight Serie A goals this season, seven were at the Stadio Olimpico. For the first time this season at the sixth game, Edin Dzeko failed to score on home turf.

Bologna picked up four points from the last seven games. The Rossoblu have beaten Roma only once in the last 21 years, a 3-2 thriller at the Olimpico in September 2012. Home and away in all competition, that’s the lone outlier among seven draws and nine defeats.

Marek Hamsik scored his 103rd Napoli goal, matching the tally of Antonio Vojak. The only ones above him for the club now are Edinson Cavani on 104, Attila Sallustro on 108 and Diego Armando Maradona’s 115. It was his 50th Serie A goal at the Stadio San Paolo.

Lazio extended their positive streak to seven rounds. Keita Balde Diao scored 87 seconds after Hamsik, the fastest equaliser of the Serie A season so far. The Senegal international striker has four goals this season, already matching his total for last term.

Both Napoli and Lazio have kept a clean sheet at half-time in the last three rounds, while they also failed to find the net only twice this season. The Partenopei have won just two of their last eight competitive matches.

The last seven Serie A meetings between Napoli and Lazio have provided a total of 28 goals, home and away.

Juventus have won their last five meetings with Chievo, home and away. In fact, the Old Lady lost just once in 27 Serie A encounters, drawing seven and winning the other 19. That lone defeat was 1-0 at the Bentegodi in January 2010 with a goal from Gennaro Sardo.

Sergio Pellissier celebrated his 400th Serie A appearance with the 99th goal, his first since April 20 against Frosinone. The 37-year-old has put five goals past Juve, but the most recent was in December 2010.

The Flying Donkeys have just two points from five rounds, having previously amassed 13 from seven games.

In all 11 Serie A games with Mario Mandzukic on target, the Bianconeri have emerged victorious. This season the Croatian found the net twice, both from Juan Cuadrado assists.

Miralem Pjanic has scored 12 direct free kicks in Serie A since arriving in 2011 – nobody has done better in that period.

The Bianconeri have been without a goal at half-time in each of their six Serie A away fixtures this season.

Milan have won all eight games this season in which they’ve opened the scoring.

Gianluca Lapadula celebrated his debut Serie A goal and a day later his first Italy call-up. Ilija Nestorovski found the net in each of his last three games and contributed six of Palermo’s total nine goals this season.

Palermo have lost all six of their Stadio Barbera matches in Serie A this season and five in a row overall. The Sicilians have lost seven of their last nine meetings with Milan, home and away, with a lone 2-0 victory at San Siro in November 2014 and 2-2 draw at the Barbera in October 2012. The Rossoneri are unbeaten in this Serie A fixture since a 1-0 in March 2011.

Empoli broke their drought after 765 minutes of football – eight rounds. The Tuscans had scored only two goals all season, both of them in the Week 3 victory over Crotone, but bagged four in one match.

The last time Empoli scored four or more goals on their travels was May 2013, a 5-1 Serie B victory at Vicenza. Massimo Maccarone also got two that day. Before the Stadio Adriatico, Empoli had never managed more than three away goals in a Serie A match.

Riccardo Saponara got his first goal since December 2015, a 3-0 victory over Carpi. Manuel Pucciarelli hadn’t found the net since facing Inter on May 7.

Maccarone’s last Serie A strike was in a 2-1 win against Torino on May 15, while his most recent brace was a 3-2 away success at Bologna on December 19, 2015.

Pescara have lost four of the last six games and no clean sheets in seven. The Delfini only ever faced Empoli in Serie A during the 1987-88 campaign, earning a 0-0 draw and 3-2 away defeat. The Tuscans won home and away the last time they met in the Serie B 2013-14 campaign.

Mauro Icardi reached 10 goals in Week 12, whereas last season he didn’t hit double figures until Week 22 in February. Ivan Perisic has scored three goals in his last four Serie A home matches.

Atalanta notched up a fourth victory on the trot, six in the last seven rounds. The Orobici hadn’t netted three or more goals in successive Serie A rounds since March 2010. Sassuolo suffered a third consecutive defeat.

Nobody has picked up more points than Atalanta in the last seven Serie A games, so they’d be top of that mini-table on 19, followed by Juventus on 18, Roma and Milan 16, Lazio 15.

Torino got back to winning ways after a three-round drought. Between them, the trident of Andrea Belotti (eight), Iago Falque (five) and Adem Ljajic (five) have scored 18 goals this season. The Granata have five different players who have at least four goals already this season, more than any other club.

Belotti has 19 Serie A goals in the calendar year 2016, beaten only by Gonzalo Higuain on 27. Il Gallo converted a penalty after seeing two saved this season.

The last time Toro had at least 27 goals in the opening 12 rounds was back in 1947-48, the era of Il Grande Torino.

Cagliari confirm their status as having the worst defence in Serie A, letting in 29 goals in 12 games. Only Parma (30) in 2014-15 have leaked more in the last 40 years.

The last seven Cagliari games have provided a total 31 goals, while the last seven Torino matches had 30.

Sinisa Mihajlovic marks the 200th Serie A appearance as a Coach with 69 wins, 72 draws and 59 defeats.

Cyril Thereau has found the net in each of the last four games, totalling five goals. Udinese are still without a win at Marassi since 2011.

Lucas Ocampos celebrated his debut Serie A goal at the sixth appearance. Udinese last beat Genoa in a 1-0 Friuli result in September 2013, managing just four draws and two defeats, home and away. The most recent win at Marassi was a 4-2 thriller in January 2011.

Udinese have not fielded an all-Italian starting XI in Serie A since January 21, 1990, a 2-0 home defeat to Milan.

Fiorentina are yet to win back-to-back Serie A games this season, while Sampdoria managed it in September. The Blucerchiati have earned five draws from 11 visits since their last victory at the Stadio Franchi, 2-0 in September 2004.

Federico Bernardeschi has four goals in the last eight Serie A rounds, having netted three in the previous 43.

Luis Muriel has scored 36 Serie A goals, but this was only his second header. The other was against Torino in February.
