Federation chief Carlo Tavecchio warns Giampiero Ventura “it would be a tragedy for Italy to miss the 2018 World Cup.”

Only the top spot in the qualifying group is automatically entered into the tournament in Russia.

The Azzurri are currently joint leaders with Spain, but Albania are also strong contenders.

“We strongly want first place in Group G so we can qualify for Russia 2018,” FIGC President Tavecchio told Sky Sport Italia.

“It would be a tragedy for Italy to miss out on the World Cup. A real tragedy.”

The decisive moment could well be a trip to Spain in September 2017, having drawn 1-1 in Turin last month.

This evening the Nazionale are in Vaduz for a qualifier against Liechtenstein.

“We respect Liechtenstein and this evening will be an opportunity to test a few variations as well as throw some young players into the mix.

“There are many talented youngsters in the squad and Coach Giampiero Ventura is perfect for them.”
