Atletico Madrid boss Simeone flew in to Milan on Friday and spoke to a reporter who asked if he was there for Inter.

El Cholo smiled and replied: “You never know…”

He was much more guarded on Saturday and refused to answer any questions when leaving a restaurant with his son, Genoa striker Giovanni Simeone.

The story is gaining traction in Spain as well as Italy now, as AS note the timing is remarkably good.

Simeone recently shortened his contract with Atleti to June 2018, meaning he’ll only stay one more season to see them inaugurate their new stadium.

After that, he’ll be free to leave and seek new challenges elsewhere.

Inter sacked Frank de Boer after just 84 days in charge and appointed Pioli, but it was considered curious that all potential Coaches were offered a contract to June 2018.

Simeone’s links with Inter go back a long way, as he played here from 1996 to 1999.

He already has management experience in Serie A, keeping Catania afloat in 2011, and is good friends with current Nerazzurri Vice-President Javier Zanetti.
