Palermo Vice-President Guglielmo Micciche said that the decision to sack Roberto De Zerbi for Eugenio Corini was “inevitable.”

The Rosanero have lost their last seven Serie A games in a row, but the final straw was Wednesday’s Coppa Italia home defeat to Serie B side Spezia.

“Corini has done well and of course left an indelible mark at Palermo. He was an extraordinary captain. Making his debut after just three days of training, he naturally has to work on motivating the players,” Micciche told Mediaset Premium.

“Corini has done well and of course left an indelible mark at Palermo. He was an extraordinary captain. Making his debut after just three days of training, he naturally has to work on motivating the players,” Micciche told Mediaset Premium.

“Corini was the first choice, no doubt. We tried to save De Zerbi, but the results went against him and in football they are what really count. It was an inevitable decision.

“The Coppa Italia defeat made the difference because we thought that we’d get that result, not just to continue in a competition we care about, but also to put an end to the negative period. That wasn’t the case and we decided to intervene.

“We will certainly make some January signings. Corini will have the next few games to get a clear idea on the squad and choices at his disposal. There’s no doubt Palermo will move on the market, because it’s too important that we secure safety.”
