Stefano Pioli explained his tactical choices after Inter beat Genoa 2-0 and tried to reassure the protesting fans.

Marcelo Brozovic bagged a brace, but the Nerazzurri required two goal-line clearances to keep Genoa from scoring.

“We wanted to pressure our opponents. We did suffer in some situations where we should’ve been more focused, but it was an important stepping stone because we won,” Pioli told Mediaset Premium.

The Coach opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation and surprisingly picked Rodrigo Palacio rather than Ivan Perisic.

“In the first half we should’ve attacked the space better. Genoa were doing it well and our strikers struggled to receive any clean service. Naturally there is pressure, we’re in a difficult moment and playing at San Siro, but I see a positive attitude and the desire to prove we don’t belong in 11th place.

“We got it wrong against Napoli, partly due to our approach, but the other games have been decent. That means there is quality here. We need to be more efficient both when defending and attacking.”

The fans staged a silent protest for the entire first half, only hanging up insulting and threatening banners.

“We cannot be satisfied with the season so far either, so we must accept the criticism and give our best. It’s a long season, we will certainly improve and want to be in a better position by the Christmas break.

“We are working to get the best out of our potential, but right now is the time for determination, humility and playing an efficient style of football.”

Gabriel Barbosa was again left on the bench and still has only one 16-minute appearance under his belt. When will Gabigol get to play?

“When there are situations that I consider to be opportune,” replied the Coach. “My only objective is what is best for the team. If I think Gabi is in better shape than his teammates, then I’ll play him.”
