Fabio Capello recalled his shock at Inter selling Roberto Carlos to Real Madrid and revealed his debt to Milan President Silvio Berlusconi.

Speaking to Fox Sports in an interview due to be aired on Friday evening, Capello began by confessing he “couldn’t believe” Inter were willing to sell Carlos, whose sale to Madrid in 1996 was reportedly caused by a disagreement over his position with then-Coach Roy Hodgson.

“Shortly after I arrived at Real, an agent called me to say that Inter were selling Roberto Carlos. I couldn’t believe it,” the former Blancos boss told Fox Sports.

“I made myself send a fax to have official status of the Brazilian defender’s sale.

“I quickly called the President to tell him that he had to rush to close the deal the next day. I think it was the quickest signing in history.”

On his ill-fated return to Milan a year later, Capello added: “My adventure at Madrid ended with a phone call from Berlusconi, who asked me to go back to Milan.

“I owed everything to him and couldn’t say ‘no’.”
