Vincenzo Montella believes it can be “the start of a new era” after Milan beat Juventus for the Supercoppa Italiana – their first trophy in five years.
The game ended 1-1 after 90 and 120 minutes in Doha with Giorgio Chiellini and Giacomo Bonaventura goals cancelling each other out.
It was decided in a penalty shoot-out, where Mario Mandzukic hit the bar and Gianluigi Donnarumma stuck up a hand to save Paulo Dybala’s spot-kick.
“It’s a great moment and the lads are very proud too. It’s a good start,” smiled the Coach at his arrival at Malpensa airport.
“Let’s just say I would like it to be the start of a new era and this is the best way to open it up. Juve are such a strong rival and in recent years they have dominated Serie A.
“We are so pleased also because we managed to beat a great team.”
Montella and the squad were greeted at the airport by fans at 5.30am on Christmas Eve.
“I think they are here to show their happiness. There are already high expectations every time you put on the Milan jersey.”
