Coppa: Milan comeback sinks Toro

Juraj Kucka and Jack Bonaventura turned it around as Milan pushed past Torino 2-1 and will face Juventus in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

The Rossoneri will visit Juventus in the quarter-final on January 25.

Curiously, these two sides will meet again on Monday evening in Serie A, but the Granata lost here 3-2 in the first round of the season with Gigio Donnarumma saving a last-gasp Andrea Belotti penalty. Toro still haven’t beaten Milan since November 2001, managing seven draws and 12 defeats, home and away in all competition.

Alessio Romagnoli and Luca Antonelli were ruled out, so Gustavo Gomez and Jose Ernesto Sosa got rare starts, while Toro gave Juan Manuel Iturbe his full start and made the trip without Iago Falque and Leandro Castan.

Marco Benassi’s effort was crucially deflected wide and Iturbe’s first touch let him down on Daniele Baselli’s through ball. Antonio Barreca had accidentally sent Jack Bonaventura clear with an error, but sprinted back to make up for it with a decisive tackle.

Torino had started stronger at San Siro and took the lead when Belotti sprung the offside trap on a Benassi pass and slipped the finish under Donnarumma from nine yards.

Moments later Adem Ljajic sprinted past Gustavo Gomez to set up Belotti, whose volley was deflected inches over. At the other end Juraj Kucka’s absolutely stunning volley from the edge of the box shaved a coat of paint off the post.

Straight after the restart Joe Hart smothered at Gianluca Lapadula’s feet and accidentally got a kick to the head, but was able to continue with a bandage.

Milan tried to fight back, Jose Ernesto Sosa nodding a Suso corner off target. Hart was at full stretch to turn away a Suso effort, but could do nothing when Kucka met a low Lapadula cross at the far post from the tightest of angles to equalise.

Moments later the game was turned around completely, as Gomez won back possession in midfield and Bonaventura got in front of Lorenzo De Silvestri to volley in Suso’s chipped assist from 12 yards.

Belotti sprung the offside trap to go clear, but Donnarumma used his legs to deny the angled drive one-on-one. The goalkeeper denied Il Gallo again on a curling strike, while Bonaventura blasted over after intercepting a pass and squirming between two defenders.

Barreca received a second yellow card for a late tackle on Suso. Torino poured forward during seven minutes of injury time, but Gomez came to the rescue when Maxi Lopez pounced on a Gabriel Paletta error.

Lapadula wasted an incredible chance on 94 minutes, as he managed to waltz round Hart only to fire straight at Emiliano Moretti on the line.
