“Pescara are the side who caused us the most problems all season,” warned the Coach, recalling the opening 2-2 draw.

“If someone remembers their game away to Roma, they’ll understand how complicated this is. They have a lot of quality and didn’t reap the rewards that their performances deserved. We need to be focused and humble.”

Napoli had to fight back in order to beat Spezia in the Coppa Italia midweek.

“We changed many players and yet remained the same, both good and bad. This means it’s our fault, we are evidently transmitting something to the squad that leads to these black-out moments. We need to improve, as a few minutes can transform a game that was under control.

“This side has many young and other experienced players, so in theory we could have a few years at a high level, but it depends also on what happens in future.

“I think the only way to improve long-term is to give 101 per cent in every match. That is our objective, without looking beyond the horizon.”

Leonardo Pavoletti made his debut for a few minutes in the Coppa, while Arkadiusz Milik has been given the all-clear to resume training.

“Dries Mertens is back and Pavoletti has been out for a while due to injury, so he needs a few more training sessions before he can start.

“Milik has technically recovered, but that’s not the same thing as being ready to play. We’ll see how long it takes him to reach the same level as his teammates.

“When Manolo Gabbiadini was called upon, he has always been ready. Nothing has changed compared to four days ago, so he is in the mix along with the others.”

Does Sarri expect any more gifts from the January transfer market?

“Santa Claus has been and gone, so I don’t expect a damn thing from anybody!”

Diego Armando Maradona is in town, so he could well be at the Stadio San Paolo.

“Diego has the keys to the San Paolo, he is its legitimate owner. He will choose whether to come or not.”
