Diego Armando Maradona “will become the ambassador of Napoli around the world” and be made an honorary citizen of Naples.
“We spoke for a long time in Rome on Saturday,” President Aurelio De Laurentiis revealed.
“As soon as Maradona resolves his issues with outstanding taxes, he will become the ambassador of Napoli around the world.”
El Pibe de Oro held a theatrical event this evening, a Q&A on the stage with many of his former teammates present to exchange stories.
“I feel at home here, as I always have done,” said Maradona. “I never betrayed you! I was at Barcelona, one of the biggest clubs in the world. Gaspart told me not to go, he’d offer another five-year contract with double my current wages.
“But I said no, because I’d had an argument with President Nunez and told him Napoli was waiting for me. Compared to money, I prefer to chase a football!”
He also apologised publicly to the son he refused to acknowledge for 30 years.
It’s reported Maradona will be back for a public event in May to be given honorary citizenship of Naples by the Mayor.
The ceremony could be at the Stadio San Paolo or at another public venue.
