Sassuolo paid the price for sitting on a 1-0 lead, as Serie B outfit Cesena caused a huge outfit with their 2-1 Coppa Italia victory.

It’s the second top flight club that Cesena have knocked out of the tournament this season after Empoli. They’ll go on to face Roma or Sampdoria in the quarter-finals. This is only the second time they've reached this stage after 1970-71.

The Neroverdi finally seemed to have their season back on track in 2017 after an injury crisis wrecked their Serie A and Europa League campaign. Domenico Berardi, Gregoire Defrel, Pol Lirola and Andrea Consigli were rested.

It took just four minutes to break the deadlock, as Michael Agazzi did all he could to beat away a Matteo Politano effort from a corner, but Lorenzo Pellegrini was ready for the tap-in.

Pietro Iemmello just failed to meet a Claud Adjapong assist in front of goal, then Alfred Duncan and Iemmello combined a series of passes inside the box without being able to finish it off.

Cesena finally threatened on 41 minutes, Cristian Dell’Orco with a decisive block on Camillo Ciano.

After the restart, Politano’s header skimmed the crossbar and Agazzi managed to deny Iemmello one-on-one after a Duncan through ball.

Just as it seemed to be going towards a comfortable Sassuolo victory, Luca Antei was adjudged to have tripped Andrea Cocco and Ciano stepped up to convert the penalty, drawing Cesena level.

It didn’t serve to wake Sassuolo up, as instead Cesena turned the game around completely moments later on the counter. Antonio Balzano surged down the right and rolled across for the totally unmarked Karim Laribi to side-foot home from 10 yards against his parent club.

Federico Ricci fired straight at Agazzi in stoppages, but the goal from Sassuolo loaner Laribi proved decisive.
