Mario Rui finally made his full debut for the Giallorossi after his summer move from Empoli, having recovered from a torn ACL, while Mohamed Salah and Alessandro Florenzi were still unavailable. Sampdoria made the trip without Edgar Barreto, Ricky Alvarez, Angelo Palombo, Carlos Carbonero, Jacopo Sala and Emiliano Viviano, but gave January signing Bartosz Bereszynski his debut.

Sampdoria almost scored on the counter after three minutes, as Luis Muriel shrugged off Federico Fazio to hit the base of the near post from close range.

Roma also rattled the woodwork with an absolutely sensational Leandro Paredes volley from the edge of the box that smacked against the underside of the crossbar.

El Shaarawy tested Christian Puggioni, but the goalkeeper had to fly in order to beat away another Paredes scorcher.

Roma finally did take the lead with a genuine stunner, as the Matias Silvestre touch was poor and Nainggolan wasted no time, smashing a right-foot volley from outside the area that looped into the far top corner. It was unstoppable and on the bench Francesco Totti swung a scarf around his head in celebration.

Nainggolan set up another for El Shaarawy moments later with a delightful back-heel flick, but the Little Pharaoh fired over. El Shaarawy’s low drive was palmed round the near post and on the corner Nainggolan blasted wide from a similar position to the goal.

Within two minutes of the restart, El Shaarawy won back possession and threaded through for Edin Dzeko’s angled drive into the far bottom corner.

Dzeko’s looping header from a corner bounced off the far post and Rudiger’s follow-up was parried, then Dzeko’s snapshot from the D was palmed round the upright.

Samp wasted a great opportunity on the counter, a passing move finished by Ante Budimir’s angled drive off target, and moments later Roma added a third.

This too was spectacular, as Dzeko’s 40-metre cross-field pass was controlled by El Shaarawy, who shrugged off Bereszynski and placed a delicate lob over Puggioni’s fingertips.

Totti was introduced and twice stung Puggioni’s gloves, while Patrik Schick did have the ball in the net, but only after wandering offside.

Diego Perotti returned from injury and curled inches past the far post, then set up the fourth with a chipped pass from the left for Nainggolan’s header. It completed the Belgian's first brace in a Giallorossi jersey.
