Diego Lopez arrives for Palermo

Diego Lopez has arrived in Sicily to take over as Palermo Coach, describing it as “a great opportunity”.

Eugenio Corini resigned as boss of the Rosanero this week, and the Uruguayan immediately emerged as the leading contender to replace him.

This morning the former Bologna and Cagliari Coach has arrived in Sicily, and he spoke to reporters in the airport.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” Diego Lopez said.

“Palermo is an important city, I met with the President [Maurizio Zamparini] yesterday and he made me very happy because the first thing he said to me was to do well.

“We talked about the coming months, it’s important because he believes. We’re in a very difficult and complicated situation [11 points from safety] but I believe we can do it.

“Words aren’t much use right now, we have to work. The President talked about this season, but also next year. That makes me think of something important.

“The transfer market? I haven’t asked for anything.”
