Gigi Buffon turns 39 today, but it was almost very different for the Juventus goalkeeper, as it’s revealed Milan turned him down.

The shot-stopper started his career at Parma and became the most expensive ‘keeper of all time when moving to Juve for the equivalent of €53m in 2001.

“Buffon is the best out there today and yes he is a relative of mine,” 87-year-old Milan legend Lorenzo Buffon told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I took him to Milan when I was a talent scout and they decided against signing him for their academy.”

Now the Rossoneri have Gianluigi Donnarumma, believed to be Italy’s heir to Buffon and Dino Zoff.

“I advise Donnarumma to work hard. I like that he doesn’t make spectacular saves for the sake of it, just like Zoff. Zoff was the best along with Lev Yashin, who I was fortunate enough to meet.”
