Luciano Spalletti couldn’t help but complain about the refereeing after Roma were denied a late penalty in the 3-2 defeat to Sampdoria.

“It was not offside. There’s not much to say, because really that was not a difficult situation to read,” shrugged the Coach on Sky Sport Italia.

Luciano Spalletti couldn’t help but complain about the refereeing after Roma were denied a late penalty in the 3-2 defeat to Sampdoria.

Edin Dzeko was brought down in the box, but incorrectly flagged offside.

“It was not offside. There’s not much to say, because really that was not a difficult situation to read,” shrugged the Coach on Sky Sport Italia.

“The officials got distracted for a moment and misinterpreted the move. He was a metre and a half behind the line, it’s a disconcerting incident, because that should be easy for the linesman.”

However, the Giallorossi twice fumbled a lead at Marassi, so must also take some of the blame.

“We lacked a bit of maturity. In the first half Sampdoria pressed us hard with a very high tempo. We should’ve kept the ball and made them run around a bit, but we didn’t manage to do that. In the second half we came out better and took the game in hand, aside from those three minutes when we conceded the goals.

“The defence didn’t move that badly, it’s just that with all that density in the Sampdoria midfield we were a little slow to read some through balls and paid the consequences.

“Luis Muriel’s free kick was a missile and it took a deflection too, so not much you can do about that. Those incidents decided the game, but overall we did well.

“We weren’t fast enough reading situations or passing the ball. That was also because of the non-stop pressing and continual tracking back from Sampdoria.

“We had the chance to get the points here and we threw them away.”
