Marco Giampaolo said Sampdoria “played with courage and were rewarded” with the 3-2 victory over Roma.

The Blucerchiati fought back twice and eventually snatched the victory with a deflected Luis Muriel free kick.

“Football is not an exact science,” smiled the Coach in his press conference. “You have to cling to the tangible things and the rest can change on the day.

“My team put in a perfect performance with great support from our fans. I told the players we needed to give it our all in order to motivate the supporters too, as it’s like a surfer riding a wave.

“We deserved this and will continue working with enthusiasm. In the past we’ve lost games, but the determination of the squad was always there. I told them they must differentiate between performance and result.

“Samp played with courage today and were rewarded. There was a moment when our intensity levels dropped, we got stretched out and Roma started passing it well. We could’ve capitulated, but instead we held out and emerged at the end.

“Fabio Quagliarella deserves special praise, as he was indomitable. So was Bruno Fernandes, as long as his legs held up.

“Christian Puggioni had an injury and couldn’t take goal kicks, so Milan Skriniar had to do it.”
