Genoa had the better chances in a goalless draw away to Sassuolo, rattling the crossbar and forcing a great save with 15-year-old Eddy Salcedo Mora.
The new season kicked off and Sassuolo had Cristian Bucchi as their Coach after Eusebio Di Francesco moved to Roma. Cristian Dell’Orco was on the treatment table, while Diego Falcinelli returned after his impressive campaign on loan at Crotone. Genoa missed injured Gianluca Lapadula, Nicolas Spolli and Thomas Rodriguez, so Andrej Galabinov made his Serie A debut in attack. Andrea Bertolacci also came back on loan following a troubled spell at Milan.
Genoa had gone down to 10 men in two of the previous three meetings between these sides.
Galabinov saw his header smothered and a snapshot beaten away on Goran Pandev’s assist. Domenico Berardi failed to make the most of a gift from Miguel Veloso, as Mattia Perin rushed off his line to block.
Darko Lazovic’s cross-shot had to be fingertipped over, but the best chance of the game so far came on the hour mark, as Biraschi blasted on to the crossbar from a low Lazovic cross.
Genoa made history late on, introducing 15-year-old Eddy Salcedo. Diego Laxalt scuffed a promising opportunity from six yards set up by Veloso, but the last chance fell to Salcedo, who stung Consigli’s gloves from distance.
