VAR was the star at the Bentegodi, as Atalanta had a goal and a penalty revoked with the technology, but a late equaliser given to them against Chievo.
The hosts had to do without Riccardo Meggiorini, but welcomed back Samuel Bastien, while the Orobici were fresh from a 3-0 Europa League triumph over Everton. Papu Gomez was rested with Leonardo Spinazzola and Robin Gosens injured.
Atalanta had won their last three meetings with Chievo, home and away, scoring six goals and conceding one. The most recent victory for the Verona club was 1-0 here in December 2015.
There was controversy within five minutes, as first the referee pointed to the spot for a challenge on Josip Ilicic, but then the VAR officials changed the verdict. This was because in the build-up, Andrea Petagna had failed to keep the ball in play.
Jasmin Kurtic horribly blasted over a Timothy Castagne pull-back, but at the other end Pierluigi Gollini got a hand to Lucas Castro’s assist for Perparim Hetemaj, then on the corner Castro hit the side-netting.
A set play came out to Marten De Roon for his missile, forcing Stefano Sorrentino to palm out from the near top corner.
Roberto Inglese’s overhead kick wasn’t far wide and Atalanta thought they had taken the lead on the half-hour when Sorrentino beat away another De Roon screamer into the path of Ilicic, but once again the VAR intervened to confirm the Slovenia international was offside.
Jose Luis Palomino performed a goal-line clearance almost by accident, as he was in the right place at the right time to charge down a Nenad Tomovic header.
The deadlock was eventually broken by a sudden Samuel Bastien snapshot, his ferocious right-foot strike from distance right into the far bottom corner.
Sorrentino was decisive once more, sticking out a foot for a reaction save on Ilicic from close range, while Gollini got down to palm a Valter Birsa snapshot round the post.
Andrea Masiello scored against Everton midweek and almost added another, drilling just wide from the edge of the area, as did substitute Bryan Cristante, as Atalanta pinned Chievo back into their own half.
Roberto Inglese was dangerous on the counter, forcing Gollini into a low save, but it was largely an Atalanta siege and Masiello’s volley was cleared off the line.
VAR was the star of the show yet again, as play had moved on for at least 60 seconds when the referee was alerted to a potential incident in the box. He went to view it and decided Riccardo Orsolini had been bundled over, so Papu Gomez converted the penalty to equalise.
