Alessandro Matri saw one penalty parried, but converted the second as Sassuolo sink his former club Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena.
The Sardinians were brimming with confidence following back-to-back victories over Crotone and SPAL, all without conceding, having opened the campaign with very tough fixtures against Juventus and Milan. Sassuolo, on the other hand, scraped just one point this season and were still missing star man Domenico Berardi.
Sassuolo had never won a Serie A trip to Cagliari, managing one draw from three previous attempts. Last season, there were 15 goals in the two meetings between these sides (4-3 in Sardinia, 6-2 at the Mapei Stadium).
Alessio Cragno immediately needed a sensational double save on Simone Missiroli’s diving header and the Alessandro Matri follow-up, getting a knock to the head for his trouble.
Matri had the ball in the back of the net when Cragno beat away a Pol Lirola snapshot, but was flagged offside.
Sassuolo were dominant and earned a penalty when Leonardo Pavoletti clumsily bundled Matri over. However, Matri took the resulting spot-kick and Cragno stuck out a leg to parry.
Andrea Consigli needed a great reaction save too, denying a Diego Farias header from close range on the Joao Pedro cross, but Sassuolo received another penalty when Fabio Pisacane brought down Stefano Sensi. Matri stepped up again and this time left Cragno standing.
Farias wasted a good opportunity to equalise, misplacing the cross for Giannetti, who also saw a header whistle wide.
Saved penalty: Matri 31 (S)
