Fiorentina doomed Benevento to a ninth defeat out of nine with Marco Benassi, Khouma Babacar and a Cyril Thereau penalty.
The hosts were rock bottom without a single point from their eight debut Serie A rounds, plus had to do without Andrea Costa, Vittorio Parigini, Marco D’Alessandro and suspended Luca Antei and Fabio Lucioni. They hosted Stefano Pioli’s Viola, today playing in blue, with Gil Dias and Riccardo Saponara sidelined.
Cristiano Biraghi’s free kick went past everyone to bounce off the crossbar and it was only a warning, as Fiorentina took the lead moments later.
Cyril Thereau knocked down a Federico Chiesa cross for Giovanni Simeone, who had far too much time and space to set up Marco Benassi’s side-foot finish into the far bottom corner.
Simeone also sprung the offside trap to test Alberto Brignoli at the near post, but Benevento were very unlucky when Danilo Cataldi’s ferocious strike from distance thumped the inside of the upright on 36 minutes.
Khouma Babacar came off the bench for the second half and scored straight away, as Jordan Veretout nodded down a cross from the right for the Senegal striker to turn in.
Chiesa skimmed the crossbar when leaning back to volley German Pezzella’s cross, then Brignoli gave away a penalty by catching Babacar’s ankle. Thereau stepped up and converted into the roof of the net, though Babacar clearly wanted to take the spot-kick himself.
Benassi blasted one at Brignoli from distance, but it was a comfortable victory for the Viola.
