SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 9 - 22 Oct 2017 (14.00 UK)
Milan 0 - 0 Genoa
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza

Leonardo Bonucci was sent off for lashing out an elbow, yet Milan down to 10 men for over an hour had the better chances in a 0-0 with Genoa.

The Rossoneri had lost three Serie A games on the bounce and were booed off the field after Thursday’s 0-0 Europa League draw with AEK Athens. Luca Antonelli and Andrea Conti were injured, but Vincenzo Montella made more changes with a 3-4-2-1 system that had Fabio Borini, Jack Bonaventura, Suso and Hakan Calhanoglu supporting Nikola Kalinic. Genoa got their first win of the season, 3-2 at Cagliari last week, and started ex-Milan men Adel Taarabt and Andrea Bertolacci.

Genoa had won four of the last six meetings between these clubs, home and away, losing the other two at San Siro in 2016 and 2017. These sides haven’t shared the spoils since a 1-1 draw here in November 2013.

Mattia Perin got down well to palm a low Fabio Borini effort round the base of the near post, and Andrej Galabinov’s counter was rolled just in front of Taarabt.

Just as Montella’s men seemed to be playing better, they went down to 10 men. Bonucci swung out an elbow to leave Aleandro Rosi bleeding badly from the cheekbone as a corner was whipped in and the referee viewed VAR footage to flash the straight red card. Milan had to play over an hour with a man down and as it’s violent conduct, Bonucci will almost certainly receive a two-match ban, ruling him out against Juventus next weekend.

Despite this situation, the hosts kept pushing forward and pinning Genoa back with Suso and Bonaventura particularly lively.

Genoa made changes after the restart and started to increase the pressure, as Bertolacci’s curler from the edge of the area shaved a coat of paint off the far top corner of the goal.

Franck Kessie drilled just wide on the counter when he should’ve passed it, but Bonaventura limped off clutching his hamstring.

Kalinic could not have come closer on 75 minutes when he only had to tap in Suso’s cross from a couple of yards out, but couldn’t find the ball.

It was impossible to tell Milan were down to 10 men, as Suso again burst down the right and pulled back for Borini, his shot charged down inside the area by Ervin Zukanovic.

Lapadula had a chance on the counter for Genoa, but Cristian Zapata managed to sprint back and intercept. Patrick Cutrone came off the bench and Suso continued to give 120 per cent with a series of dangerous crosses and pull-backs.
