Benevento thought they’d earned their first Serie A point with a late penalty, but Leonardo Pavoletti sealed a dramatic Cagliari win.
Only two clubs had fired their Coaches going into Week 10 and they came face-to-face at the Sardegna Arena. Massimo Rastelli was axed last week to make way for Diego Lopez and on Monday Benevento axed Roberto Baroni, so Roberto De Zerbi made his debut.
The hosts took the lead at the end of a truly comical move, as the ball ricocheted around the box for what felt like an age, Luca Cigarini hitting the bar and a series of efforts charged down before Paolo Faragò bundled it over the line from close range.
Di Chiara brought down Marco Sau for a penalty, but the same striker got back up and fired the spot-kick over the bar in a huge waste of a great opportunity.
Cagliari lost Fabio Pisacane to a thigh problem, but they continued to dominate and Leonardo Pavoletti’s header skimmed the upright.
Alberto Brignoli was right behind a Pavoletti header and Danilo Cataldi wasted a golden opportunity for the visitors, failing to turn in from six yards after Iemmello had flicked on an Achraf Lazaar cross.
A late Benevento corner flashed all the way across the face of goal and in stoppages Le Streghe thought they had earned their first ever Serie A point when Farago bundled into Coda and Pietro Iemmello converted successfully.
However, no later had they finished celebrating and Cagliari were back in front with a trademark Pavoletti header into the far top corner on Farago’s cross to send the crowd wild.
Missed penalty: Sau 16 (C)
