Fiorentina made the most of Torino errors at both ends of the field to send the Granata spiralling into crisis.
It was a return to the Stadio Franchi for Sinisa Mihajlovic, Adem Ljajic and a reunion for Marco Benassi, facing the club he left in the summer following a difficult rapport with his Coach. Andrea Belotti, Cristian Ansaldi, Lyanco and Joel Obi didn’t make the trip, so Umar Sadiq again played as the centre-forward.
Cyril Thereau had an early opportunity and turned it wide on a Cristiano Biraghi assist, but the striker went off with an injury.
Torino were pushing early on with enthusiasm and very little accuracy, so Fiorentina took advantage by breaking the deadlock with ex-Granata midfielder Benassi. Giovanni Simeone turned provider with a smart assist and Benassi spun round to beat Salvatore Sirigu.
Emiliano Moretti was unlucky not to equalise moments later, his left-foot strike coming off the crossbar on a corner, and Sadiq failed to make the most of an intriguing opportunity in the box.
M’Baye Niang moved to centre-forward role in the second half and immediately wasted a golden chance, as he ran clear on an Alex Berenguer through ball only to fire on to the bar of an open goal.
Sirigu parried a Federico Chiesa daisy-cutter, then plugged the gap when Chiesa pounced on a Nicolas N’Koulou error, but could do little on Simeone’s goal on a Benassi assist.
Khouma Babacar made an immediate impact, his shot stinging Sirigu’s gloves, then converting a penalty. Antonio Barreca was sent off, having shoved Chiesa in the back as he was about to nod into an empty net from a couple of yards.
