Mirco Antenucci’s goal proved enough for SPAL to beat Genoa, ending a run of three consecutive defeats, and leapfrog them in the table.
This was a fight near the bottom of the table, as SPAL had lost three on the bounce and the Grifone with six defeats from their last nine outings, winning only once this season. Alex Meret, Alberto Grassi, Sergio Floccari and Vaisanen missed out for the hosts, while Isaac Cofie and Nicolas Spolli didn’t make the trip.
There was a great chance for Genoa within four minutes, as both Gianluca Lapadula and Luca Rigoni flung themselves at the Diego Laxalt cross without making contact.
Alfred Gomis flapped an Andrea Bertolacci corner for Laxalt to drill just wide, while Manuel Lazzari got back for a couple of decisive interceptions in his own penalty area.
SPAL took the lead just shy of the hour mark through Antenucci, as Alberto Paloschi knocked on a long Dias Felipe ball and the striker fired in from the edge of the area.
Genoa thought they had equalised with Adel Taarabt, but Lapadula was already offside in the build-up, then Mattia Perin got down well to beat a Federico Viviani free kick off the line.
Ivan Juric threw everything he had at SPAL, but the hosts clung on for a precious victory.
