Lazio continued their remarkable run of form to go three points clear in third place, ending Udinese’s seven-round unbeaten streak.
This game was originally rained off on November 5 and rescheduled for January 24. At the time, Udinese were in a deep crisis under Gigi Del Neri, but ex-Lazio full-back Massimo Oddo had turned their fortunes around with a seven-round unbeaten run. The Aquile were also flying high, even though Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile was out injured, so used an all-new strike partnership of Luis Nani and Felipe Anderson. The visitors missed Kevin Lasagna, Valon Behrami, Ali Adnan and Silvan Widmer.
Udinese haven’t beaten Lazio since a 1-0 result here in September 2014, followed by one point from the next seven meetings.
Lazio took the lead with a stroke of luck when Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s taut cross into the six-yard box was turned in accidentally by Samir, who was trying to anticipate Marco Parolo. It was the fourth own goal Udinese have given away this season, more than any other club.
Within a couple of minutes, Udinese nearly equalised, as Thomas Strakosha got down for a fine one-handed save on Antonin Barak’s angled drive, then Stefan de Vrij flung his body in the way of the Stipe Perica follow-up.
Parolo drilled wide from the edge of the box and Felipe Anderson wasted a promising counter-attack. The Biancocelesti doubled their advantage straight after the restart, as Felipe Anderson burst past Danilo to reach the by-line and pulled back for a Nani tap-in.
Udinese had strong penalty appeals when Jens Stryger-Larsen went down as he tried to control a pass and Parolo seemed to clip his heels, but the VAR silent check waved play on.
Milinkovic-Savic saw his header deflected wide by Perica, then Thomas Strakosha almost gave away a goal with a poor clearance, but made up for it by palming Rodrigo De Paul’s strike over the bar.
Felipe Anderson killed off the game as he ran on to a long Senad Lulic ball over the top, turned on the turbo past two Udinese defenders and curled into the far bottom corner with the inside of his right foot.
