Ciro Immobile’s penalty set up a tense finale, but Roma won the Derby della Capitale thanks to a Diego Perotti spot-kick and Radja Nainggolan.
It was a rare Derby della Capitale with both sides doing very well in Serie A and Europe. There was also an atmosphere of unity, as both sets of supporters marked the 10th anniversary of Gabriele Sandri’s death, the Lazio supporter and DJ who was accidentally killed by a policeman’s stray bullet while sat in the back of a car. He was remembered with a huge banner and his parents were present to thank the crowd.
There were injury doubts, but both Radja Nainggolan and Ciro Immobile were able to start the match, though Patrik Schick, Rick Karsdorp, Felipe Caicedo, Wallace and Felipe Anderson missed out.
Immobile had the ball in the back of the net after two minutes, but had strayed offside. Roma slowly took more control and Edin Dzeko’s header skimmed the upright on a Diego Perotti cross, but Adam Marusic should’ve done better on a promising counter when he hesitated in front of Alisson.
Immobile nodded over from a Marusic cross and Kevin Strootman turned wide from an Aleksandar Kolarov pull-back. Nainggolan’s ferocious volley was deflected and on the resulting corner Dzeko steered it towards the far bottom corner, but was denied a goal by Thomas Strakosha’s fingertips with a great save.
Straight after the restart, Bastos tripped Kolarov just inside the penalty area and Perotti converted with his trademark stuttering run-up, as Strakosha guessed the right side, but it was too powerful to keep out.
Bastos was furious with himself for the error, but moments later made another mistake when caught in possession and Nainggolan drilled a precise strike into the far bottom corner from the edge of the box to double Roma’s lead.
Lucas Leiva risked an own goal, deflecting Kolarov’s pull-back just over the bar, so with the Giallorossi dominating, Simone Inzaghi introduced Luis Nani and Jordan Lukaku.
Just as Roma seemed to be in control, Kostas Manolas foolishly tried to chest a cross out of play, but did it with his upper arm instead and VAR confirmed the penalty, which Immobile converted.
Lukaku went on a mazy run to wreak havoc in the Roma penalty area and Marco Parolo’s angled drive flashed just past the far post.
Immobile pounced on a terrible Dzeko back-pass and Alisson came flying out to clear, then smothered a Bastos flick in the final minute. The tension was sky high during the six minutes of stoppages.
