Inter are the new Serie A leaders after crushing Chievo 5-0 with an Ivan Perisic hat-trick, Mauro Icardi and Milan Skriniar goals.

The Nerazzurri are top of the table alone for the first time since January 2016, as Napoli lost to Juventus on Friday, and remain the only unbeaten side this season. Matias Vecino was only fit for the bench with Roberto Gagliardini and Joao Miranda suspended, so Marcelo Brozovic, Joao Mario and Andrea Ranocchia stepped in to the rarely changed XI. Chievo were missing their entire first choice midfield with Perparim Hetemaj, Lucas Castro and banned Ivan Radovanovic.

Chievo won their first ever trip to San Siro on December 15, 2001. That remains their only victory here in 15 visits, drawing four and losing 11.

Ranocchia almost scored within a couple of minutes, his header on to the roof of the net from a corner, while Davide Santon drilled just wide from distance.

Chievo also had a great chance, as Riccardo Meggiorini’s glancing header from a Valter Birsa cross was parried by Samir Handanovic from close range.

Ranocchia was a constant danger from set plays, another header skimming the post, but the deadlock was broken on 23 minutes.

Santon stung Stefano Sorrentino’s gloves at the near post and Ivan Perisic volleyed in the rebound, the finish squirming through the goalkeeper’s hands.

It should’ve been 2-0 when Mauro Icardi pounced on an awful Rigoni back-pass, but sent Joao Mario clear and Sorrentino stuck out a foot to parry.

Brozovic intercepted another poor pass, this time from Roberto Inglese, and sent Icardi clear for an angled drive off the inside of the far post. It was the Argentine’s 16th Serie A goal of the season, making him Capocannoniere.

Joao Mario wasted another good opportunity with a scuffed finish when clear on goal. Antonio Candreva and Brozovic drilled across the face of goal to skim the woodwork, while Perisic’s volley on a Joao Mario assist was too close to the goalkeeper.

Chievo paid a heavy price for misplaced passes, as this time Perisic intercepted Birsa’s wayward ball, strolled forward and thumped the angled drive across Sorrentino into the far bottom corner.

Inter had no intention of holding back and added a fourth on the counter. Candreva charged on to a long ball and his cross found Milan Skriniar for a diving header, as the centre-back had bombed forward.

Brozovic was determined to get in on the action, as he nutmegged Fabrizio Cacciatore and unleashed a screamer from 25 metres that clipped the crossbar.

Substitute Yann Karamoh almost got his name on the scoresheet too, drilling inches wide on an assist from Dalbert, while Sorrentino palmed away a Ranocchia header and Borja Valero volley.

Perisic got his hat-trick with the final kick of the game, as from a corner Joao Mario's effort hit him, so the Croatian turned to drill the loose ball into the far bottom corner from 10 yards.
