Goran Pandev’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave Genoa a crucial 1-0 win in their relegation six-pointer with Verona.
The Macedonian international struck in first-half stoppage time, and despite having the better of the play throughout the Butei couldn’t create much in the way of clear scoring chances and remain 19th.
With just six minutes on the clock, Daniele Verde’s chipped cross went wayward, and bounced off the top of the Mattia Perin’s crossbar.
The forward tried his luck again, but his shot from the edge of the box went just over.
The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges, but the best of the early chances fell to Genoa.
Andrea Bertolacci was set up well by Taarabt on the edge of the box, but his left-footed shot took a deflection off teammate Pandev and looped over the bar.
Alessio Cerci was next to try his luck for the Butei, turning in the box and seeing his left-footed shot go just wide.
It looked as though the first half would be goalless, but Taarabt beat the offside trap to cut it back for Bertolacci.
The midfielder couldn't make proper contact, but the ball fell kindly for Pandev who confidently struck the ball into the far side netting.
The second period followed a similar pattern to the first, with Verona pressing but unable to fashion many clear-cut chances.
Indeed, Luca Rigoni should have made it 2-0 when he was played through one-on-one, but while his shot beat Nicolas it went just past the post.
Daniel Bessa thought he had equalised when he turned home the rebound from a Cerci shot, but the Italian international had handled it before Perin saved his effort.
Kean and Bessa exchanged passes down the flank, but a fantastic block denied the latter a tap-in.
Subsitute Davide Biraschi should have killed the game in stoppage time, but he shot wide after a great break from Taarabt.
