It ended goalless between Inter and Lazio, but both sides had several great chances and the Aquile had a penalty decision revoked via VAR.
The Nerazzurri went from unbeaten all season to a slide of three consecutive defeats, including Wednesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final exit to rivals Milan in extra time. This was a head-to-head for European ambitions, especially as Lazio have a game in hand, but Joao Miranda and Danilo D’Ambrosio were out injured, while the visitors missed Felipe Caicedo.
The Aquile have won just nine of their previous 74 Serie A trips to Inter, losing 41 and drawing 25. The most recent victory was 2-1 in December 2015.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic unleashed a rocket that stung Samir Handanovic’s gloves and on the resulting corner Bastos nodded off target.
Inter thought they had to take the lead when Borja Valero’s cross found Ivan Perisic from 10 yards, but Thomas Strakosha flew to palm the volley over the bar.
Lazio went on a rapid counter from Inter’s corner, but Borja Valero got back for a decisive tackle after Luis Alberto’s first touch unusually let him down. There was a similar situation at the other end with Perisic not making the most of Mauro Icardi’s assist.
With the last kick of the first half, a Luis Alberto corner was flicked on by Borja Valero, his looping defensive header accidentally bouncing off the crossbar.
Borja Valero nearly scored at the other end on 57 minutes, turning Lucas Leiva inside out for a shot from the edge of the box that Strakosha palmed round the base of the near post.
Lazio were awarded a penalty moments later, but it was revoked via VAR because Immobile’s cross bounced off Milan Skriniar’s leg first and ricocheted on to the arm, so could not be considered voluntary.
Felipe Anderson came off the bench and his curler flashed past the far top corner, then the Brazilian went even closer as he dribbled into the box and smashed a shot from a tight angle, which Handanovic fingertipped across the face of goal.
Handanovic also used his legs to deny Marco Parolo at the base of the near post, but Felipe Anderson wasted a golden opportunity when turning Immobile’s assist wide from six yards.
Perisic’s header on a Joao Mario cross had no power and Stefan de Vrij got a decisive block on Icardi from Perisic’s pull-back.
