Lazio lost Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile to injury, but still crushed Chievo 5-1 with a Sergej Milinkovic-Savic brace.
The Aquile were still in contention on three fronts, but had a surprisingly poor record against Chievo, winning only two of their last seven meetings. Stefan Radu was suspended and Felipe Caicedo injured, while the visitors were on a run of two points from six rounds and had an injury crisis ruling out Roberto Inglese, Lucas Castro, Riccardo Meggiorini and Alessandro Gamberini.
The hosts were unfortunate not to take the lead on nine minutes, as Marco Parolo’s cross-shot deflected off Nenad Tomovic and thumped the bar.
Lazio did break through when Luis Alberto’s strike from an Adam Marusic assist took a deflection off Bani and looped over Stefano Sorrentino.
However, less than a minute later it was 1-1, as Bastos lost Manuel Pucciarelli, allowing him to chest down a long Ivan Radovanovic ball and score on the half-volley.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic got the Aquile back in front, as his snooker shot found the tiny gap between goalkeeper and upright out of seemingly nowhere.
Capocannoniere Immobile limped off with a muscular problem to make way for Felipe Anderson.
Chievo were awarded a penalty in first half stoppages, but the referee viewed the incident again, ruled there wasn’t enough contact between Senad Lulic and Mariusz Stepinski, and changed his mind thanks to VAR technology.
Wallace almost gifted Chievo an equaliser with his shocking back-pass intercepted by Stepinski, but the striker somehow hit the side-netting.
Milinkovic-Savic added another spectacular goal to his tally, watching and waiting for the Lucas Leiva ball to float over the top and timed his volley perfectly from a tricky angle.
Serbian midfielder Milinkovic-Savic almost got a hat-trick, his right-foot curler skimming the woodwork, then Bastos spun on the edge of the box to turn in a Luis Nani assist with the aid of a deflection off Tomovic.
Nani then added a fifth himself, managing to steer the shot into the far top corner despite losing his footing after a Jordan Lukaku assist.
