Genoa’s run came to an end at three wins, as Mattia Destro scored one and created another for Bologna’s 2-0 victory.
These two sides were locked together on 30 points in lower mid-table, but the momentum was with the Grifone, who had won three in a row, including last week’s 2-0 victory over Inter. Bologna revamped into a new 3-5-1-1 formation with Blerim Dzemaili in a more advanced role, as Rodrigo Palacio was injured, Sebastien De Maio suspended and Simone Verdi only fit for the bench after a long lay-off. Genoa missed Miguel Veloso, Giuseppe Rossi, Armando Izzo and Adel Taarabt.
Romagnoli got away with a fresh-air cross in the box, then Andrej Galabinov nodded over and at the other end Dzemaili blasted over the bar.
Diego Laxalt saw his volley charged down in the area and Genoa had a very dangerous counter-attack with Dzemaili’s interception on a Pandev cross-field pass risking an own goal. Antonio Mirante had to back-pedal on an Oscar Hiljemark cross-shot that was finding its way under the bar.
The deadlock was finally broken after the restart. Adam Masina sprung the offside trap on a smart Erick Pulgar ball over the top and managed to prod it beneath Mattia Perin, Rosi just about cleared off the line, but Mattia Destro followed it up. That goal was Destro’s first touch inside the opposition penalty area.
Genoa poured forward and made all three attacking substitutions, but Perin had to parry Federico Di Francesco’s angled drive.
Mirante made a crucial one-handed save on Darko Lazovic’s strike from 10 yards at the end of a well-worked team move and Luca Rossettini skimmed the crossbar after a corner.
Andrea Poli limped off, but Genoa gifted Bologna their second goal with shoddy defending. Nicolas Spolli was caught in possession in the centre-circle by Destro, who sprinted off towards the goal and generously rolled across for unmarked substitute Cesar Falletti to tap in his debut Serie A goal.
An audacious Pandev lob from midfield almost caught out Mirante, who had to rush back and fingertip over the bar. Genoa tried to the end, but Helander charged down a Pandev strike in the box.
