Simy’s cushioned volley off the inside of the boot ended the Crotone crisis, beat Bologna and revamped the relegation battle.
This was something of a relegation tussle, as although Roberto Donadoni’s men were practically safe in mid-table, the Squali were stuck in the bottom three. Walter Zenga had to do without Ante Budimir, Andrea Nalini, Mariano Izco and Stefan Simic, but welcomed back Rolando Mandragora, Marco Capuano and Adrian Stoian from suspension. Giancarlo Gonzalez was out for the visitors, but Antonio Mirante returned from his ban in goal.
Marcello Trotta was unlucky not to give Crotone the lead 12 minutes in, as his scorcher was fingertipped on to the upright by veteran goalkeeper Mirante.
The shot-stopper also had his gloves stung by Federico Ricci’s angled drive, but at the other end Alex Cordaz pushed a Simone Verdi free kick over the bar.
Crotone broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal, as an Adrian Stoian cross from the left found Simy to get between defenders and cushion in the volley off the inside of his left foot from 10 yards.
Erick Pulgar flashed a trademark long-range strike just wide and Adam Masina’s header was over the bar. Ricci should’ve scored another when Simy nodded on a Marco Davide Faraoni free kick, but the finish was too weak to surprise Mirante.
