Simone Verdi’s free kick and a late Adam Nagy strike have effectively ruled Bologna out of the relegation race.
Roberto Donadoni’s men were relatively comfortable mid-table despite poor form, but Hellas desperately needed points as they were in penultimate place, despite being fresh from a 1-0 win over Cagliari. Vasilis Torosidis, Godfred Donsah and Giancarlo Gonzalez missed out, while Moise Kean didn’t make the trip.
The last two competitive meetings between these sides provided nine goals, so entertainment was expected at the Stadio Dall’Ara.
Bologna had an early chance, as Rodrigo Palacio knocked down Simone Verdi’s cross for Blerim Dzemaili, forcing a desperate Nicolas reaction save.
Verdi was brought down on the edge of the box and a free kick from there is like a penalty to the specialist, who promptly curled a left-footer into the far top corner.
Alessio Cerci hit the side-netting, while Mattia Destro flicked a Palacio strike on to the upright, but was in an offside position.
Nicolas needed a spectacular save to prevent the Erick Pulgar scorcher arrowing its way into the far top corner.
Verdi drilled wide again and his cross was turned inches over by Palacio’s head, while Dzemaili’s strike was fingertipped over the bar by Nicolas.
Verona poured forward in the final minutes, but Mohamed Fares saw his curler skim the woodwork. However, it was Bologna who added a second in stoppages, as Nicolas parried the Mattia Destro angled drive into the path of Adam Nagy.
