SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 33 - 18 Apr 2018 (19.45 UK)
Verona 0 - 1 Sassuolo
Lemos 38 (S)
Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi

A Nicolas howler gifted Mauricio Lemos his first Serie A goal, Sassuolo the points and potentially doomed Hellas Verona.

This was a massive relegation showdown, as only six points separated them going into the Stadio Bentegodi. Hellas were in penultimate position, three points adrift of safety, and the Neroverdi were certainly not comfortable yet.

Antonio Caracciolo was suspended for Verona, joining injured Moise Kean, Mattia Zaccagni and Simone Calvano in the stands. Sassuolo made the trip without Stefano Sensi, Pol Lirola, Edoardo Goldaniga and Timo Letschert.

Verona were unbeaten in this top flight fixture, winning two and drawing the other, and won three of their last four home matches going into this midweek battle.

In the opening minutes there was a spectacular Andrea Consigli fingertip save from Franco Zuculini from close range, but Nicolas had to make a double desperate stop first on Matteo Politano from close range, then flying to palm away Domenico Berardi’s chest and volley.

However, Nicolas committed a howler to gift Sassuolo the opening goal. He tried to anticipate Politano, but just ended up pushing the ball into the path of Mauricio Lemos for his debut Serie A goal.

Verona should’ve equalised when Rogerio misplaced a pass in his own third, but Mohamed Fares also made a mistake on the assist for Ryder Matos.

Claud Adjapong skimmed the crossbar with a fierce effort from the edge of the box.
