Luis Alberto saw his penalty saved and Ciro Immobile went off injured, but Lazio still won 1-0 at Torino to go four points clear of Inter.
With Inter losing to Juventus, this was a huge opportunity to break clear of fifth place and almost lock down the Champions League spot. Marco Parolo was out injured, so Alessandro Murgia stepped in, while Toro had lost sight of Europe and missed Joel Obi, Antonio Barreca, Lyanco and suspended Cristian Ansaldi. Simone Edera was chosen for the not fully fit Iago Falque.
There was a big chance within the first 60 seconds, as Alessandro Murgia sprung the offside trap on a Luis Alberto through ball and Salvatore Sirigu had to rush off his line to parry.
Toro reacted, Lorenzo De Silvestri’s ferocious effort from a tight angle stinging Thomas Strakosha’s gloves, but the game changed when Immobile pulled up suddenly clutching the back of his right thigh. It’s either a hamstring or thigh strain and his tears suggest the season is over for the Capocannoniere.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic chested down a long ball and was hacked from behind by Nicolas Nkoulou for a clear penalty. However, Luis Alberto’s spot-kick was weak and central, so Sirigu managed to block it.
Moments later, Sirigu rushed off his line to smother at the feet of Lucas Leiva, who had barged his way through a gap in the defence.
Luis Alberto and Felipe Caicedo couldn’t get shots away, and when it eventually came to Lucas Leiva, Emiliano Moretti got a decisive block.
Sirigu fingertipped a Milinkovic-Savic right-foot curler round the far post. Stefan Radu also picked up a muscular problem and was replaced at half-time by Martin Caceres.
Sirigu got down very quickly for a stunning reaction save on Lucas Leiva, but could do nothing on the Milinkovic-Savic header at the near post from the resulting corner, as Lazio took the lead.
It should’ve been 2-0, but Caicedo robbed Nkoulou only to then over-hit the lob, then saw his angled drive beaten away by Sirigu’s foot.
Milinkovic-Savic completed a wonderful give and go with Lucas Leiva, volleying inches past the far post, but it was still Lazio's 12th away win of the season.
