SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 36 - 6 May 2018 (14.00 UK)
Lazio 1 - 1 Atalanta
Barrow 2 (A), Caicedo 24 (L)
Stadio Olimpico

Felipe Caicedo cancelled out a Musa Barrow opener, but Atalanta will leave feeling they deserved more than a draw against Lazio.

The Aquile had opened up a four-point gap from Inter in the Champions League zone, but also lost Capocannoniere Ciro Immobile to a thigh strain, joined in the stands by Marco Parolo and Stefan Radu. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side went into the weekend in sixth place, valid for the Europa League, but Andrea Petagna, Leonardo Spinazzola, Luca Rizzo and banned Mattia Caldara missed out.

Atalanta were unbeaten in five, including three wins on the bounce, while Lazio came in with five victories and a draw since their last setback.

It remarkably took just two minutes to break through, as Musa Barrow ran on to a Marten De Roon through ball and reacted much quicker than the two centre-backs to drill home. The 19-year-old is a remarkable discovery for Gian Piero Gasperini.

Papu Gomez nearly doubled it with his bobbling effort from the edge of the box that clipped the far post with Thomas Strakosha beaten.

Lazio held out under pressure and got back on level terms with some inspired build-up play from Luis Alberto, who controlled a ball over the top and laid it on a silver platter for Caicedo to simply tap in from five yards. It was the Spaniard’s 14th Serie A assist of the season.

Caicedo almost got another to turn the game around, his header skimming the bar, but the injury crisis intensified with Luis Alberto over-stretching to cause a muscular problem.

It remained wide open, with substitute Felipe Anderson trying to surge through defenders and Papu Gomez firing straight at Strakosha, but Remo Freuler’s first touch wasted a very promising Timothy Castagne cross.

Stefan de Vrij skimmed the bar with a fierce and dipping strike after the restart, but Bastos performed a stunning, goal-saving block seven minutes from time to stop Robin Gosens tapping in at the back post.

Atalanta seemed to have much more energy in the closing stages and they poured forward, with Strakosha sticking out a foot to deny Gomez from close range, then De Vrij had to stop Hans Hateboer turning in the rebound.

A Bryan Cristante header skimmed the bar, as did an attempt from Jose Luis Palomino on Ilicic’s free kick.
