Chievo made hard work of it, but Roberto Inglese eventually secured victory and Benevento set a new unfortunate record.
The Flying Donkeys had broken clear of the drop zone after two wins from two under caretaker manager Lorenzo D’Anna, but weren’t entirely safe yet, so needed a result against Benevento to avoid looking over their shoulders in the final 90 minutes. Le Streghe missed Luca Antei, Pietro Iemmello, Filip Djuricic and Cristiano Lombardi.
Benevento were trying to avoid setting a new all-time record for defeats in a single 20-team Serie A season, as they were on 28 level with Pescara’s 2012-13 tally going into the Bentegodi.
The attitude of the hosts was inexplicably poor, as Benevento dominated the first half, Stefano Sorrentino needing a stunning save to deny Danilo Cataldi from a Vittorio Parigini cross.
Benevento had more possession and chances, yet Chievo thought they had taken the lead with Roberto Inglese, but it was ruled offside using VAR.
Chievo seemed to be listening to Crotone’s result at Napoli and opting not to run any risks at all, handing the initiative and possession to Benevento.
Inglese did get the opener eventually, as Christian Puggioni meekly parried a Perparim Hetemaj screamer into the path of Inglese.
Puggioni was at fault again soon after, misjudging a Valter Birsa cross, but Dario Dainelli failed to get the tap-in at the back post.
Inglese fired straight at on-rushing Puggioni from close range, while at the other end Parigini’s diving header skimmed the bar.
