SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 38 - 20 May 2018 (14.00 UK)
Genoa 1 - 2 Torino
Iago Falque 30 (T), Baselli 57 (T), Pandev 80 (G)
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Iago Falque and Daniele Baselli gave 10-man Torino victory at Marassi, although Goran Pandev almost completed the Genoa comeback.

Neither side had anything left to play for, having achieved their objectives after a different Coach took over mid-season. Davide Ballardini steered Genoa to safety and earned himself a new contract, while Walter Mazzarri failed to keep up with the Europa League challengers.

Ervin Zukanovic was suspended for the hosts, who also missed Darko Lazovic, Aleandro Rosi, Nicolas Spolli and Adel Taarabt, while Toro striker Andrea Belotti recovered from a sprained ankle and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (younger brother of Lazio midfielder Sergej) made his Serie A debut. It was a return to Marassi for ex-Genoa men Cristian Ansaldi, Iago Falque, Nicolas Burdisso and M’Baye Niang.

Torino’s last Serie A victory at Marassi was in September 1981, followed by six draws and eight defeats.

Genoa had been more aggressive, but it was Toro who broke through on the counter when Belotti drew out Mattia Perin and rolled it back across the face of goal for Iago Falque to tap in.

Armando Izzo went off with a muscular problem and Iuri Medeiros saw his free kick skim the far post.

Goran Pandev came on for the restart and Diego Laxalt’s curler was just wide, but once again Torino were far more clinical with their few scoring opportunities.

Cristian Ansaldi flashed a cross-shot across the six-yard box and Daniele Baselli was quickest to react.

Genoa did get one back with 10 minutes left on the clock. Cristian Molinaro’s attempt to stop Lapadula going clear on a through ball accidentally set up Pandev, who delicately dinked the finish over Milinkovic-Savic for a cheeky lob.

Things got even worse for Torino, as moments later Ansaldi received a second yellow card for taking down Stephane Omeonga at the by-line.

Genoa could smell blood and Pandev was unlucky not to score with another delicate chip, this time it clipped the top of the crossbar.
