Ciro Immobile ended his Fiorentina curse with the first goal against the Viola, as Lazio squeezed a tense 1-0 victory.
The Biancocelesti were in desperate need of a boost, as their run of five victories in all competition ground to a halt with two straight heavy defeats to Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt. Luis Alberto and Dusan Basta were dropped, with Felipe Caicedo a new partner to Ciro Immobile. The Viola missed Kevin Mirallas and Cyril Thereau, so Marko Pjaca completed the trident attack.
Marco Parolo flashed an early attempt just wide, but neither side made the most of shocking errors. Wallace’s awful back-pass was intercepted by Marco Benassi, who then fired straight at Thomas Strakosha.
At the other end, Alban Lafont came flying out and collided heavily with Lucas Leiva, but calls for a card were waved away.
Lazio broke through and Ciro Immobile ended his Viola curse, scoring his first ever goal against Fiorentina. Stefan Radu nodded on a corner to the back post for Immobile’s tap-in.
There was a lot of tension at the Stadio Olimpico, as Giovanni Simeone had penalty appeals for a last-ditch Francesco Acerbi challenge waved away. Gerson was then booked for simulation as he went down in a coming-together with Lucas Leiva.
The Viola came out fighting for the second half, with Strakosha needing to stick out a foot to deny Cristiano Biraghi after Federico Chiesa left Wallace in his dust.
Senad Lulic and Marko Pjaca had half-chances, while Lafont had to beat away a ferocious Joaquin Correa strike. In stoppages Fiorentina threatened an equaliser, but Acerbi’s sliding block prevented the Edimilson Fernandes assist finding two teammates in the box.
