Gonzalo Higuain struck twice and Suso completed a hat-trick of assists for Jack Bonaventura, but 39-year-old Sergio Pellissier got a consolation for Chievo.
Alessio Romagnoli pulled out with a muscular problem, so with Mattia Caldara, Andrea Conti and Ivan Strinic injured, it fell to Cristian Zapata for his first Serie A appearance of the season. Chievo missed Emanuele Giaccherini, Fabrizio Cacciatore, Nenad Tomovic and Filip Djordjevic, so surprisingly gave 39-year-old Sergio Pellissier his first start of 2018.
Franck Kessie tested Stefano Sorrentino early doors with a cushioned volley at the back post, while Ignazio Abate risked an own goal with his header back to Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was in part blinded by the bright sunlight.
Milan had a double chance on 19 minutes when first Sorrentino got down to parry a Jack Bonaventura strike, then the Hakan Calhanoglu rebound was charged down by Federico Barba’s desperate block.
Chievo were punished for a lack of communication, as Mattia Bani knocked on a cross without realising Sorrentino had come off his line, so Suso immediately pulled it back from the by-line for Higuain to pounce.
Pipita scored again soon after, this time Suso’s through ball allowed the Argentine to turn quickly and stroke in with the inside of his right boot.
Valter Birsa should’ve put Chievo back into it on the stroke of half-time, but fired off target from eight yards on a Fabio Depaoli cross.
Bonaventura celebrated his 150th competitive appearance for Milan by unleashing a powerful finish from outside the box, which took a deflection off Luca Rossettini to loop over Sorrentino. It was Suso’s third assist of the game.
However, Milan still couldn’t keep their first Serie A clean sheet of the season, as 39-year-old Pellissier pounced on poor defending for a Leris through ball and fired in low from the edge of the box.
Calhanoglu had the ball in the net from a Higuain through ball, but had wandered offside.
