Cagliari completed a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down with two goals in three minutes to grab a precious point away to SPAL.

Both sides were coming off heavy defeats and in need of a boost. Everton Luiz was suspended for the hosts, who also missed Mattia Valoti, while Alfred Gomis returned in place of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in goal. The Sardinians were still without Ragnar Klavan and Diego Farias.

It took just two minutes and 28 seconds to break through, as Manuel Lazzari surged down the right and floated his cross back to where Andrea Petagna had peeled away from his marker for a diving header from 10 yards. Alessio Cragno might’ve had it covered, if not for a deflection off Darijo Srna.

Petagna almost had a second on 12 minutes, stinging Cragno’s gloves at the near post after a Mohamed Fares cross was intercepted.

Joao Pedro and Artur Ionita had shots charged down, then Filippo Romagna’s glancing header from a corner skimmed the far post with Leonardo Pavoletti at full stretch just unable to get the final touch.

Lazzari’s cross-shot flashed along the six-yard box and Pavoletti’s acrobatic volley was off target, while Thiago Cionek used his body to block Joao Pedro sliding in at the near post.

Joao Pedro’s header floated just over the bar from a Simone Padoin cross, but SPAL doubled their lead with a wonderful team move.

Lazzari again flew down the right, pulled back for Antenucci, who turned Srna as if he wasn’t even there and drilled home from nine yards.

However, Cagliari reacted straight away, within two minutes getting back into it with Pavoletti’s trademark towering header from a corner.

Incredibly, the third goal in five minutes saw the Sardinians equalise. Ionita gathered a pass on the penalty spot, dragged the ball to commit a sliding Thiago Cionek and fired through a sea of legs.

It was wide open, as Joao Pedro’s shot from distance was deflected and Lazzari hit the side-netting, while in stoppages Jasmin Kurtic couldn’t get a strong header to the Fares cross.
